Workshop on new sistems of access to credit in Malta

The Maltese Italian Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with Confartigianato (an independent Association of Artisans and SME’s which groups around 700,000 entrepreneurs and artisans in Italy) and The Chamber of Commerce of Bari, on the 19th November 2010 organised a one day workshop on Mutual Guarantee Associations “ New Instruments for the entrepreneurial  associations and small enterprises of the Mediterranean Countries.” The workshop was held at The Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta.

The Hon. Dr. Jason Azzopardi LL.D., M.A., M.P., gave the welcome address for the workshop. Dr. Azzopardi’s speech was centered around the importance that these new instruments of credit could have for the economy of the island especially since 97 per cent of Malta’s businesses are small or medium enterprises.

Klaus Pedersen, Internationalisation Manager of The Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry, went on to explain the importance of internationalisation especially so in view of the actual economic situation the world is going through.

Dr. Mario Laforgia and Dr. Vito Lozito from Confartigianato of Bari, described the experience of mutual guarantee associations in Italy and the advantages for the small businesses. Followed by a session of questions and answers with representatives of local banks and enterprises.

From the debate emerged several points which will certainly be the subject for further meetings and research.

The workshop was closed by Dr. Giuseppe Lo Russo from The Chamber of Commerce of Bari, who gave a brief presentation of the European Community of SME’s whilst wishing that in the future these new systems of access to credit will be put to good use.
