CORONAVIRUS-0916

A record 106 new COVID-19 cases have been detected overnight, the health authorities confirmed on Wednesday, the highest-ever figure registered in Malta since the start of the pandemic.

"This is a very high number of cases" Charmaine Gauci, superintendent of public health told Times of Malta on the Ask Charmaine programme.

"This is the largest number we have had so far – we are currently looking into the cases to trace the possible causes. A number of today's new cases are from homes from the elderly, while a good number are sporadic. These are the worrying cases as they are the ones that spread in the community. Several are related to workplace and family clusters," she added.

Although the number of active cases is expected to shoot up once again as the number of new patients with the virus increases, the rate of people who need to be hospitalised remains on the low side.
