International Trade in Goods in Malta: March 2022

NSO INTERNATIONAL TRADE IN GOODS IN MALTA MARCH 2022Provisional figures for registered trade in goods in Malta recorded a deficit of €246.3 million during March 2022, compared to a deficit of €180.3 million in the corresponding month of 2021.

Total Trade in Goods: March 2022

Data in this news release presents all international trade in goods registered up to the indicated cut-off date. Provisional data recorded a total trade in goods deficit of €246.3 million during March, compared to a deficit of €180.3 million in the corresponding month of 2021. Imports amounted to €553.5 million, while exports totalled €307.2 million. This represents an increase of €80.6 million and €14.7 million, respectively, over the same month of the previous year. The rise in the value of imports was primarily due to Machinery and transport equipment (€95.5 million). On the exports side, the main increases were registered in Machinery and transport equipment (€24.1 million), and Chemicals (€9.6 million), partly offset by a decrease in Miscellaneous manufactured articles (€21.9 million) 

Total Trade in Goods: January-March 2022

During the first quarter of the year, the total trade in goods deficit widened by €245.0 million when compared to the corresponding period of 2021, reaching €640.6 million. Imports and exports increased by €406.5 million and €161.4 million, respectively, and amounted to €1,636.9 million and €996.3 million. Higher imports were mainly recorded in Machinery and transport equipment (€147.1 million), Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials (€144.1 million), and Chemicals (€48.7 million). On the exports side, Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials (€119.0 million), Food (€31.1 million), Chemicals (€23.1 million), and Semi-manufactured goods (€20.3 million) accounted for the main increases, partly offset by a decrease in Machinery and transport equipment (€24.5 million). 

Goods were imported mainly from the European Union (55.0 percent) and Asia (21.8 percent). Similarly, exports were mostly directed to the European Union (30.1 percent) and Asia (16.4 percent). The main increase and decrease in imports were registered from Italy (€108.2 million) and France (€80.9 million), respectively. With respect to exports, the main increase was directed to the United Kingdom (€43.1 million), whereas Italy reported the highest decrease (€35.6 million).

Trade in Goods excluding specific chapters : March 2022

In March, the deficit of trade in goods excluding specific chapters amounted to €112.6 million, compared to a deficit of €131.2 million recorded in the same month of 2021. Imports and exports amounted to €339.4 million and €226.8 million, respectively. This represents a 1.0 percent decrease in imports and a 7.2 percent increase in exports over the corresponding month of the previous year.

Trade in Goods excluding specific chapters: January-March 2022

During the first three months of 2022, the deficit of trade in goods excluding specific chapters widened by €84.6 million when compared to the same period of 2021, reaching €354.5 million. Both imports and exports increased by 18.9 percent and 13.0 percent, respectively, and amounted to €1,008.4 million and €653.8 million.
