Provisional figures show that, during September 2023, registered trade in goods in Malta recorded a deficit of €231.6 million as opposed to a deficit of €321.8 million in the corresponding month of 2022.

Data in this news release presents all international trade in goods registered up to the indicated cut-off date. Provisional data recorded a total trade in goods deficit of €231.6 million during September, compared to a deficit of €321.8 million in the corresponding month of 2022. Imports amounted to €614.8 million, while exports totalled €383.2 million, representing drops over the same month of the previous year in both imports and exports of €91.6 million and €1.4 million, respectively. The main decreases in imports were primarily due to Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials (€69.6 million), and Food (€18.3 million). On the exports side, the main decreases were registered in Miscellaneous manufactured articles (€10.7 million) and Machinery and transport equipment (€7.4 million), partly offset by increases in Chemicals (€8.7 million), Food (€4.9 million), and Semi-manufactured goods (€4.2 million).

Total Trade in Goods: January-September 2023

During the first nine months of the year, the deficit narrowed by €589.0 million when compared to the corresponding period of 2022, reaching €3,121.5 million. Imports stood at €6,348.1 million whereas exports reached €3,226.5 million, representing decreases of €614.3 million and €25.4 million, respectively. Lower imports were mainly recorded in Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials (€457.9 million), Machinery and transport equipment (€146.4 million), and Chemicals (€76.3 million), partly offset by increases in Miscellaneous manufactured articles (€37.9 million), and Food (€27.9 million). On the exports side, the main decreases were registered in Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials (€176.6 million), Chemicals (€36.8 million), and Semi-manufactured goods (€9.8 million). These were partly offset by increases in Machinery and transport equipment (€161.8 million), Food (€20.1 million), and Miscellaneous manufactured articles (€12.6 million).

Goods were imported mainly from the European Union (53.8 per cent) and Asia (20.0 per cent). Similarly, exports were mostly directed to the European Union (38.7 per cent) and Asia (14.4 per cent). The highest increase in imports was recorded from Germany (€226.6 million), while imports from Italy registered the largest drop (€191.4 million). Exports to Germany registered the highest increase (€297.2 million), while those to France experienced the largest decrease (€165.0 million).

Trade in Goods excluding specific chapters¹: September 2023

In September, the deficit of trade in goods excluding specific chapters amounted to €148.2 million, compared to a deficit of €184.8 million recorded in the same month of 2022. Imports and exports amounted to €411.8 million and €263.6 million, respectively, representing decreases of 8.9 per cent and 1.3 per cent over the corresponding month of the previous year.

During the first nine months of 2023, the deficit of trade in goods excluding specific chapters widened by €115.1 million when compared to the same period of 2022, reaching €1,744.6 million. Imports and exports increased by 5.3 per cent and 3.9 per cent, respectively, reaching €3,906.1 million and €2,161.5 million.
