MALTA: Outbound Tourism Q2/2023
Total outbound tourists for the second quarter in 2023 were estimated at 189,443, an increase of 35.4 per cent over the corresponding quarter of 2022. Total nights spent amounted to 1,252,385.
The total number of outbound tourists for the second quarter of 2023 was estimated at 189,443, marking a 35.4% increase compared to the corresponding quarter in 2022. The total number of nights spent amounted to 1,252,385.
During the quarter in question, April-June 2023, a total of 114,848 outbound tourist trips were taken for holiday purposes, followed by 46,973 trips to visit friends and relatives. The majority of outbound tourists were aged between 25 and 44 years (47.3%), followed by those in the 45-64 age bracket (29.6%).
Outbound tourists to both EU and non-EU countries increased by 37.7% and 27.9%, respectively, compared to the same quarter in 2022. Italy remained the most popular destination, accounting for 39.9% of total tourist trips.
The number of nights spent by outbound tourists increased by 31.2%, exceeding 1.2 million nights. The majority of guest nights (50.5%) were spent in non-rented accommodation establishments. The average length of stay for outbound tourists was 6.6 nights.
The total estimated expenditure by outbound tourists between April and June increased by 45.6% compared to the same quarter in 2022, reaching €165.6 million, equivalent to an average of €874 per person.
January-June 2023
The total number of outbound tourist trips for the first half of 2023, January-June, numbered 347,623, marking a 52.4% increase compared to the same period in 2022. The number of nights spent by outbound tourists increased by 45.1%, surpassing 2.3 million nights. Additionally, the total estimated expenditure by resident tourists stood at €297.3 million, 62.7% higher than that recorded for the same period in 2022.
