Maltese Inbound Tourism: April 2021

INDEXGDPL2020-39During the month under review, a total of 6,577 inbound tourists visited Malta for holiday purposes, followed by 2,526 tourists for business purposes. The largest share of inbound tourists were aged between 25 and 44 years (50.5 per cent), followed by those within the 45-64 age bracket (24.0 per cent). Italian residents comprised 40.7 per cent of total inbound tourists.

The average length of stay stood at 17.2 nights. The largest share of guest nights (53.8 per cent) was spent in rented accommodation establishments, with 30.7% of the nights spent in other rented accommodation and 23.1% in collective accommodation.

Total tourist expenditure was estimated at €8.8 million, of which €3.9 million were in non-package expenditure and €4.0 million were spent in other expenditure.

January-April 2021

Inbound tourists for the first four months of 2021 amounted to 43,433, a decrease of 88.3 per cent over the same period in 2020. Total nights spent by inbound tourists decreased by 71.7 per cent, totalling 633,428 nights. Total tourism expenditure was estimated at €39.3 million, a decrease of 82.5 per cent when compared to the same period in the previous year. Total expenditure per capita stood at €904, increasing from €607 in the same period in 2020, mainly as a result of longer length of stays.
