Registered Business Units in Malta: 2021
In 2021, registered business units amounted to 133,156, an increase of 1.2 percent over 2020.
This news release shows the demographic patterns of registered business units in Malta and their evolution over time.
In 2021, registered units within the statistical business register amounted to 133,156, an increase of 1.2 percent, or 1,521 registered units, over 2020. Registered units in Wholesale and retail trade (Section G) accounted for 14.3 percent of the total registered units in 2021; Financial and insurance activities accounted for 13.4 percent; Professional, scientific and technical activities (Section M) accounted for 13.1 percent; and Administrative and support service activities (Section N) accounted for 8.1 percent.
Most of the business units (97.4 percent) employed 0-9 persons (micro). The population of small (10-49) and medium (50-249) businesses accounted for 2,766 (2.1 percent) and 549 (0.4 percent) units respectively. The large businesses which employ over 250 amounted to 134 (0.1 percent). The number of registered units that employed 0-9 persons, increased by 1,284 units, an increase of 1.0 percent, when compared with 2020. The registered units that employed between 10 and 49 persons, increased by 241 units, an increase of 9.5 percent, when compared with 2020.
In 2021, 53.5 percent of the registered units were sole owners or partnerships, 42.5 percent were limited liability or public limited companies, while 4.0 percent were governmental, non-profit or other types of legal organisations.
New registrations in 2021 amounted to 11,888 units, whilst deregistrations amounted to 8,603 units.
