Residential Building Permits: Q1/2023

PASSEGGERI_IN_CROCIERA_Q12023_NSO.jpgDuring the first quarter of 2023, 496 building permits for a total of 2,540 new dwellings were approved (Chart 1). When compared to the corresponding quarter of 2022, the number of building permits decreased by 18.6 per cent while the number of approved new dwellings decreased by 20.7 per cent. The average number of approved new dwellings per building permit stood at 5.1 (Chart 1).


Approved new dwellings by type
The majority of new dwellings approved during the first quarter of 2023 were apartments (1,819), followed by penthouses (393), maisonettes (224), terraced houses (74) and other residential units (30) (Table 1). Apartments accounted for 71.6 per cent of the total number of approved new dwellings (Chart 2).

Approved new dwellings by district
When compared to the corresponding quarter of 2022, the number of new dwellings approved in Malta and Gozo and Comino decreased by 18.9 per cent and 29.0 per cent respectively. The highest number of approved new dwellings was registered in the Northern district (599) while the lowest number was recorded in the Southern Harbour district (270) (Table 2).

Approved new dwellings by locality
The highest number of approved new dwellings were issued for San Pawl Il-Baħar (178). This was followed by In-Naxxar (121), Il-Mellieħa (120), Ħal Balzan (111) and both Birkirkara and Żebbuġ (100) (Chart 3).
